Today Friday 17/2/23 we had our first RPI session with a group of 19 teachers and facilitators from all over Aotearoa on Google meet. Facilitators discussed different topics related to Reading with us. Below we did an activity where we had to *List their attributes, skills or characteristics.
What is the profile of a good reader?
Able to decode
Able to comprehend what they read.
Able to critically think about the text.
Able ask and answer questions
Able to discuss what they have read
Inference
Vocabulary
Actively making meaning: Making sense of the text, processing the system (decode text), structure of text
Use strategies e.g visualize
World knowledge + word knowledge
Grow in self-efficacy
Enjoy reading - to understand and gain knowledge & emotionally invested (empathy)
Engagement and motivation - students who read widely outside the classroom especially

Things to do:
- Recommend books to students to read.
- Get students to do the Reading survey.
- Try an idea from reading planning.
- Establish ground rules for talk to enable meaty discussion
- Graduate students to read longer texts
