RPI Day 1

Today Friday 17/2/23 we had our first RPI session with a group of 19 teachers and facilitators from all over Aotearoa on Google meet.  Facilitators discussed different topics related to Reading with us.  Below we did an activity where we had to *List their attributes, skills or characteristics.

What is the profile of a good reader? 

  1. Able to decode

  2. Able to comprehend what they read.

  3. Able to critically think about the text.

  4. Able ask and answer questions

  5. Able to discuss what they have read

  6. Inference

  7. Vocabulary

  8. Actively making meaning: Making sense of the text, processing the system (decode text), structure of text

  9. Use strategies e.g visualize

  10. World knowledge + word knowledge

  11. Grow in self-efficacy

  12. Enjoy reading - to understand and gain knowledge & emotionally invested (empathy)

  13. Engagement and motivation - students who read widely outside the classroom especially 


A Good reader…

“has the ability to understand and use those written language forms required by society and/or valued by the individual. Readers can construct meaning from texts in a variety of forms. They read to learn, to participate in communities of readers in school and everyday life, and for enjoyment.”

Things to do:

  • Recommend books to students to read.
  • Get students to do the Reading survey.
  • Try an idea from reading planning.
  • Establish ground rules for talk to enable meaty discussion
  • Graduate students to read longer texts

    Thanks for posting your reflections from Day 1 of the RPI. It was lovely to meet you.

    Gosh, when you look at the list of the 'Good Reader's Profile' it really makes you think just how much teaching and learning we must get into each of our reading lessons! I know that the resources that we were given on Day 1 can definitely help with this.

    Look forward to catching up and hearing how the past few weeks have been and how the Reading Survey went.
